The way I practice
I practice Psychiatry in an integrative way I see a person that suffers as a whole and sometimes in the traditional way to practice, we focus too much in the symptoms that present more than the reason or the cause that lead to those symptoms in the first place.
When I work with a client, I see the whole person, but also the environment where he/she moves, the rest of the family and friends, their workplace. It is important to review the eating and sleeping habits, how much a person moves or exercise, how much day light they are or not exposed too, etc.
We review thinking habits and those automatic negative thoughts that sometimes lead to the emotional reaction and behavioral reactions later on. I use medications when needed, I incorporate Psychotherapy techniques and we are also getting ready to incorporate neurofeedback in our practice. There are so many factors that contribute to dis ease, and sometimes, modifying certain habits is all a person needs.
I believe that we are complex beyond our own imagination and we are body/mind and spirit totally integrated at all times. As such, we cannot separate the parts in us and treat only the body and forget the mind, or treat the mind and forget the body and spirit. When one is sick or unfunctional, the other parts are sure to follow at some time.
Wayne Dyer once said in the past that we are “spiritual beings living a physical experience” I would add to that we are “spiritual beings living a mental and physical experience.
